Why learn about Design?

Knowledge of Human-Centered Design and Design Thinking, along with specific skills in Service Design, User Experience (UX) Design, or Life-Centered Design, is pivotal for creating products and services that not only meet business goals but also address real needs of people and make their lives easier. Designing with the people, as well as other living beings and ecosystems affected by your product or service, in mind is crucial for achieving sustainable success.

What is...

Human-Centered Design (HCD)

Human-Centered Design places people at the center of the design process, ensuring that their needs and capabilities guide every decision. Users and other stakeholders are actively involved and represented throughout design and development to create solutions that are meaningful, valuable, useful, usable, accessible and attractive.

Design Thinking (DT)

Design Thinking is a human-centered approach to problem solving and innovation which aims to align human needs, economic viability and technical feasibility. Design Thinking means adopting the mindset, approach and methodology of a designer to turn problems into opportunities and generate creative human-centered solutions.

Service Design (SD)

Service Design looks at the entire journey a customer, stakeholder or employee takes with an organization or service in order to improve the human experience and/or facilitate innovation. It involves crafting seamless passages across all touchpoints and channels, considering not just the customer interfaces, but also the processes and people involved behind the scenes.

User Experience Design (UXD)

User Experience (UX) Design is a human-centered design approach that is more focused on specific touchpoints along the customer journey. It's concerned with creating meaningful, smooth and intuitive interfaces and interactions, considering aspects such as usability, functionality, accessibility, aesthetics and desirability.

Relation between HCD, DT, SD, UXD

You can view Service and UX Design as specific fields of application of Design Thinking and Human-Centered Design. Service Design and UX Design compliment each other to create attractive experiences. Imagine the Service Designer as the director of an orchestra and UX designers as musicians, contributing their part to the overall symphony.

Life-Centered & Eco-Social Design

Life-Centered Design, Planet-Centered, Humanity-Centered, and Eco-Social Design, go beyond traditional Human-Centered Design: They strive to create solutions that consider their impact on all living beings and the natural environment, promoting sustainability and social equity. These approaches involve systems thinking and are highly participatory.
